Kayden: The Past by Chelle Bliss with Giveaway, Extended Excerpt, Playlist & Review

Kayden: The Past Blurb
Kayden Michaels has a past filled with sex, addiction, and heartache. A past that he’s avoided sharing with the love of his life, Sophia, and held close to his core not risking rejection.
Needing to get his addictions in check and gain control of his life for the sake of his family, Kayden is forced to confront his past and make amends for the path he’s walked.
Kayden must recount every carnal act and the betrayal from those he’s loved to identify the triggers that spur his addictions and overcome it all to be worthy of Sophia’s love – his sole reason to exist.

GoodReads:

I was an addict.

Sophia didn’t know this about me when we met – when I stole her heart.

I struggle every day with my sobriety, and Sophia is my compass. She’s what keeps me grounded and always points me in the right direction. She doesn’t nag or yell but smothers me in her love and understanding.

Sophia asked to hear my story, my past. She wanted to know everything about me…what led me to her. I gave her a condensed version – one that is closer to PG-13 compared to the NC-17 reality that I lived. No matter how much the person you love the most, the one who is the center of your universe asks about your past, you never give the full truth. I never want Sophia to compare herself to any of the women or experiences that I’ve had before her. Sophia is perfection in my eyes. No one could ever compare to her.

I’d like to say my life began again when I met Sophia, that I was given a clean slate. Sophia met me at the point in my life where I had given up on love. My life consisted of work and pleasure – pleasure from the unattached sexual relationships and the booze that had filled my nights.

When my life spiraled out of control, Sophia caught me in her web of security and love. She is my savior, the only thing that is true in my life. She can’t know my entire story. Who would want to know the true story of the love of their life, the father of their child?

The thought of Sophia being with another man makes my skin crawl and pisses me off. She’s mine, and I’d like to think that I’ve been the only man in her life and the first one to taste her, but I know I’m lying to myself. Ignorance is bliss, and I’d rather stay in the dark.

After our child was born, I thought it was necessary to get help to control my drinking. I needed to make sure I never walked down the path of self-destruction again. I had too much to lose. For the first time in my life, there was something more important than myself or even Sophia. There’s a tiny little life that depends on me and needs my love and adoration.

I didn’t want to go to group counseling – I’ve done that before, and it sucked; it wasn’t more than a temporary fix. I needed something to get to the root of my addiction and allow me to find other ways to cope with the pressures in life besides at the bottom of a bottle. The counselor told me to write down the major events in my life – the ones that caused my drinking to go out of control or drove me to drink.

He said I needed to understand the cycle. What came first – the booze or the problems? He asked me to write a journal about my life. Everyone who I could remember that triggered my drinking, use of drugs, and events that were caused by my addiction that had an impact on my life. I didn’t see the use in writing it for someone else to read and analyze, but he said I would understand it in time.

Where do I start the tangled mess that was my life? Do I start with my first taste of booze, the first sniff of coke, or the crazy bitches I’ve experienced? There will be bits that I leave out; things I don’t want the world to know. I’ve included the ones that show what has molded me into the man I am today. The ones that will fill in the gaps on my troubled journey that Sophia and I overcame and show the depths of my depravity and addiction before Sophia walked into my life and turned my world upside down.

I’ll start at the beginning, what led me off the path of righteousness through my moment of self-destruction and finally salvation in the arms of a loving woman too good to be mine.

My Review: 4 1/2 stars
Fascinating insight into Kayden's character. This book gives you everything you may have wanted to know about Kayden. From high school all the way up to meeting Sophia and past that. Kayden went through so much heartache from the start. I really feel for him. However, I also would have to say that he made some crappy self-destructive choices, like reaching for a bottle everytime something got too hard or he got crushed emotionally. I'm not judging, everyone's been there, done that, got the freaking t-shirt - at least I do. This is the story of what happened to Kayden to make him into the man he is;  all the things that happened and people who used him and treated him like crap that made him change into that man. I am glad that Kayden finally found Sophia. But it seems that's the way it works, you've got to give up looking and just be yourself, and the one you're looking for falls in your life. What you do from that point is up to you. Kayden made some mistakes after meeeting Sophia, but gladly he wisened up and things came together. Great job Chelle!! I can't wait for your next book. They're always very entertaining and thought provoking (at least this one was for me), and the characters are fantastic.

Synopsis:
Welcome to Northern Nevada. The scenery is idyllic, the people are friendly and three Motorcycle Clubs rule the tri-city area between Reno, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe with an iron fist. Gisela wasn’t introduced to the thug life, she was born into it. The daughter of an American gangster, her life has been carefully orchestrated with private education, a law degree and now a respectable law firm she co-founded with Kyra Hughes, her best friend. Life is good until her high school sweetheart walks through the door of Jackson & Hughes and decides to turn her world upside down. Cillian is not an average criminal, he was brought up in the Lucifer’s Saints MC and is now V.P. of a powerful criminal enterprise. He’s no stranger to mayhem yet only one woman has ever made him feel worthy of redemption. He’s a survivor and luck has always been on his side until he is arrested and charged with the murder of an undercover ATF agent. His complicated life becomes more than he can handle when he is forced to face the only woman who has ever turned him inside out. An unconventional love story, unfinished business between these two passionate people—physical, emotional and professional—will spark a fuse that will leave a path of death and destruction in its wake.

Excerpt:
Now, I found myself in the same position with Cillian, and I couldn’t do it again. Not only because of Brianna but because I was in love with the fucking guy.
“Leave Brianna and we’ll pick up this conversation at another time. Until that happens…I don’t think I can do this.” My voice was small but firm.
He crawled over my body so he could face me. “Now you’re not playing fair. I told you I would leave her and I will. You can’t deny me—I won’t be able to do this without knowing you’re by my side.”
“And I will be when that Irish bitch is out of your life.” I gritted my teeth together. “You left me in a foreign country for her, and drop kicked my ass outta your life. Now, I’m supposed to drop everything because you give me a few empty promises after mind blowing sex? I want to believe you but we’ve got too damn much history between us, babe. I need to see some actions before I commit to anything.”
Cillian smiled wryly. “Always the fucking attorney. Fine, I’ll show you actions but you better keep up your end of the bargain.”
I turned over onto my side away from him. “Don’t worry about me. Unlike you, I don’t make promises I can’t keep.”

My Review: 4 1/2 stars
Selene did a fantastic job with this book. All the characters in this book were fantastic. I loved Gisela, that woman is hard core, knows her business and how to get things done. She may be a lawyer, but her priorities are straight. She has love Cillian since they were both 15, and that hasn't changed over time. Cillian, I liked a little less, he had his loyalties, but can't control his sexual desires. That's one thing he's going to have to overcome if he has any chance with Gisela again. It's what they both want, but it's going to be a long hard road to get there. Ronan was a good brother to Cillian in every way, I really liked him. I also thought that Kyra was interesting. This was a complex book to navigate and keep track of all the players, who was on whose side and who wasn't. A lot of different players, all related in one way or another by blood or by marriage, sometimes both. But also a lot of going on between the different MC's, some business, some pleasure. I liked that we got the story from both Cillian and Gisela. I'm looking forward to the other books that Selene has planned for the characters she's created. It's going to get very interesting, and a whole lot more complex if this book is anything to judge by.

EXCERPT

“You called me innocent back there in that parking lot. I dressed conservatively that summer because I was supposed to. You thought I was some kid who had just fallen off the turnip truck?” Elise stepped forward. From the rise and fall of his chest, his breath had deepened, and she struggled to keep her focus on his hard, dark eyes. Still a little beer buzzed, she put herself up in his face and laid it all on the line. “You tried to protect me because you’d heard rumors about Scarborough? What about the rumors I heard about you?”
His jaw hardened.
“What, you thought I wouldn’t have heard? Every woman at HaleStorm with a pulse and proper vision had your name written on their vibrators.”
This time she ignored the warning from her shoes when she clicked forward. “I didn’t let those rumors stop me, either. I’d been trying damn hard to get your attention that summer.”
He didn't move except to blink. “The trouble with rumors is they're half-true at best if true at all.” Then he did move, pressing into her space.
She hardened her gaze and met his stare, but there in the dim light of his apartment his eyes had turned the color of dark amber. And holy cow, those lashes could make any supermodel cry with envy. “Okay,” she said. “So what's your truth?”
His fingers danced up and down her spine, setting off shivers all over the place. He bent toward her, his stubble scraping her cheek. “The truth is, you were probably right when you said that this was a bad idea.”
She had said that, hadn’t she? His palm skimmed her waist and she damned herself for being sensible. “That… that probably is true.”
“And.” The heat of his hands and his breath licked along her neck and shoulders. Maybe she should have worn her coat over. “You have no idea what’s fact and what’s fiction about me.”
What Elise did know was the way he touched her now might well fry her brain. She needed to back away while she still had some semblance of her dignity. She managed one step. “Maybe I don't. My point is, neither do you.”
Other than a slight raise of his eyebrows, he didn't reply. Fine. Well, about that whole leaving with her dignity intact plan….
Another step. “Whatever. Thank you for trying to protect me. It was a misguided, unnecessary effort, but thank you for being concerned.” Finally, with a clench of fists and a huff of breath, she turned on her throbbing heel and stormed for the door.

She believes that all kinds of safe and sane love should be celebrated but she adores the fantasy-filled realm of paranormal romance the best. She lives in the Washington DC area with her family and one big scaredy cat, where she loves to spend time with good friends, go dancing, collect wacky coffee mugs from which to drink her favorite beverage, and sing off-key in her kitchen (when she isn’t making characters fall in love, that is).

"Crazy sisters, best friends, a slimy ex, and a gorgeously sexy sweet man. Who wouldn't want Another Shot at Love?" ~~ Stacy Nickelson, It Started With A Book Blog

Excerpt-
“You really should change that light bulb,” Matt said, glancing around us.
“I know.” I pushed aside my wallet to dig to the bottom of my oversized purse. “I kind of take for granted that this is supposed to be a safe neighborhood.”
“Until an alien abducts you off your poorly lit porch.”
“Very funny.” I glanced up from my purse with a smile. “But really, it’s late. You could have been home by now.”
“Gen, I’m glad to walk you to your door. I would have worried about you if I hadn’t.”
I considered him as we stood there on my porch, the light flickering above us. I didn’t want him to leave, but I didn’t know how to ask him to stay. Maybe I could ask him in for a drink, though I’d already had enough.
But I have those cupcakes…
Yeah. I could offer him cupcakes. They weren’t his favorite, chocolate with sprinkles, but yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting had to be a close second, right? Hadn’t he said a cupcake will fix everything?
“I’m really glad we went out tonight.” His voice made me jump and I dropped the keys. We both bent to pick them up at the same time and bumped foreheads.
“Sorry,” he said.
“It’s okay, I’m fine.” I clasped my forehead and laughed. Probably, I sounded hysterical. Like a rabid hyena. I couldn’t even look him in the eye when I took the keys from him. “Thanks for inviting me. I had a lot of fun tonight.”
“Me too,” he said.
I put the key into the lock, turning it slowly as I struggled with what to do about him and my out of control libido. Unlocking my door hadn’t given me enough time to figure things out, though, so I tried to prolong sliding the patio door open. That didn’t take long either, and I hesitated in the doorway, still unsure. I opened my mouth to ask him in, but nothing came out. So I stepped backward through the doorway, my gaze glued to his. After a moment, he followed me inside, part of his face lost in shadows.
Time stood still. My tongue darted out to lick my lips, and I lifted up onto my toes as he lowered his head to meet me halfway. The smell of his cologne surrounded me and my eyes drifted shut. He grasped me loosely around my back, pulling me close, sending shivers coursing through my body. His breath caressed my skin, his lips just a whisper away from mine, and my lips parted…

My Review – 5 stars
This book had me laughing so hard at times, it was awesome. Niecey has created some really great characters in this book and it was interwoven with fantastic story lines so that everyone had something going on. Gen's best friend Roxanne has her own ideas of what should happen with Gen, as does her other sister Catherine. After Gen's break up, they decide she needs to start dating, and set her up on some bling dates. The blind dates turn out to be horrendous, but also extremely funny. The way that Gen met Matt was so embarrassing and hilarious at the same time. Matt and Gen are just amazing together. They are completely honest with each other, and can just be themselves. I really liked that they took their time getting to know each other, hanging out getting to know each other. I loved that Matt came to Gen's rescue when she needed him - before they actually started dating - when they were friends who were still figuring things out. Then her stupid nut job ex decides he wants Gen back, creating a huge issue for Gen's twin, Lexie, who's got her own thing going on. Honestly, there's a lot going on with in this book, and Gen's relationship with Matt just happens to be the front story. Niecey has done a fabulous job weaving all of these different elements into a great book. I wanted to keep reading more. I'm hoping there's more for these characters. I swear, they're an untapped goldmine of hilarity and shenanigans, and many, many more hours of entertainment to be had.

About the Author –

Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.
When she’s not at her day job where she works as a legal assistant, she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.
Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new novel to be released November 2013, Another Shot At Love, is the first novel in the What’s Love??? series.
