About the Author-

I read my first romance when I was twelve, hiding in a storage closet among hat boxes and old shoes. When I was in high school, I wrote a my first novel, a pirate romance called "A Wild and Stormy Passion." (The heroine was the pirate, in case you're wondering.) Since then, I've written young adult novels and romance in almost every category.

I am a dabbler and an emotional sponge. I can't read scary books or anything with an unhappy ending. I reserve the right to love country music, puppies, true love, and happily ever after.

I review books I want to share the word about.

Excerpt:
As if on cue, the dark sky above the ocean suddenly exploded in bursts of blue and red. The rowdy revelers along the beach cheered and applauded their approval. Still on his knees, Ash maneuvered himself so he was directly behind her, one hand placed gently on her right shoulder while his soft breath tickled her neck.
His left hand reached stealthily around her. “Take the gun, Sami.”
She accepted it with shaking hands in the vain hope that he’d withdraw at the last second, tell her she didn’t have to do this, that it was all just a test of obedience and he’d never meant for her to actually shoot anyone. He couldn’t possibly be that warped, could he?
To ask her to murder someone in cold blood, in the midst of hundreds of witnesses - surely the man wasn’t that depraved. His hushed voice was sensuous against her cheek. “Relax, baby. Just watch the fireworks. We’ll wait until they light the Thunder Kings. Some anonymous donor was thoughtful enough to contribute two hundred cartons of them. They have one hell of a report and the gunfire will blend right in.”
 “Ash…”
Her anxious plea cracked helplessly and she found herself unable to vocalize anything further, all language forgotten as her mind raced desperately in search of an out. Refusal wasn’t an option with him. But it was possible, just possible, that the replacement magazine contained blanks as well…wasn’t it?
She clutched that thought to her like a security blanket.
“Shh…” His lips brushed her jaw, trailing feathery kisses down her neck that reawakened her intense longing for him despite her predicament.
“For me, sweet angel. Do this for me. Be perfect for me.”
He was practically purring against her skin, seducing her with his charisma in a way that only he could. When he turned on the charm there was nothing she could deny him - nothing. Not even this.
His hands covered hers over the grip. “Suppose I help you aim…just in case you get the notion to deliberately miss.”
He forced her to lift the Ruger. “When I tell you to, I want you to unload the entire magazine. There’s a bullet in the chamber - you’re good to go. All you have to do is pull the trigger. Nothing to it, right?”
Nothing to it. Nothing at all. All or nothing. Her heart skipped a beat when the echoing reports filled the air, and the honey-sweet voice in her ear urged, “Go ahead, baby. Don’t fail me.”
She didn’t allow herself any hesitation, didn’t grant her conscience the time to form a protest, simply closed her eyes and mindlessly squeezed the trigger. Again and again and again, until the weapon in her hands produced nothing but empty clicks that sounded in their finality even more ominous than the shots themselves and she waited, waited with pounding heart…
There were no screams. No cries for help. The steady drone of voices from the beach went on as before, the fireworks continued to boom and crackle in the night sky, and reluctantly she opened her eyes.
Seated on the blanket beside Danielle, Laiken leaned forward to listen to something one of their group was saying, shaking his blond mane with a broad grin, oblivious to his brush with death.
Unharmed. Alive.
At her feet, the sugar-white sand was littered with empty shell casings. And against her ear was his soft, velvety laugh.

My Review: 5 stars
This series kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it. This book, Fire & Ash, was a masterful spinning of the possibilities of how dark and depraved a soul can get. Asher Reid is one jacked up individual. He's always thinking about himself and how he can take someone down enojoying their fall the entire time. Samara Porter starts this book as an independant, self-sufficient woman who has had some bad luck. Little does she know that by one encounter with Asher, her entire existence will change. And it does.

This was such a compelling read for me. I had to know what was going to happen to Julian and Eva (from Winter's Touch), as they're in this book as well. The lore that Allie created was quite interesting and almost worked entirely for me. There was one flaw, but I pushed past it because everything else was so interesting. The characters introduced were quite interesting in a variety of ways. But I can't really go into it without giving too much away. Suffice it to say, this is quite a read. Oh, and don't forget to pick up the first book. They're both rather interesting. I'm hoping there will be more in this series, because I'm hooked and I want more.

My Review: 3 1/2 stars
I don't know why, but all the books in this series have been difficult for me to get into. I don't know what it is about them, but it's just not meant for me. Don't get me wrong the writing is great. Very descriptive, the characters have been at each other for a while, I just can't connect. My problem. I'm sure for others this is a fantastic series that they will want to read again and again. Vanessa has done a great job with this series, it's just not for me. My inability to connect to the characters is why I rated this low. But again, others will highly recommend this series. I'd say give it a chance, it may be fabulous for you.

Excerpt:

“Hey, look who’s here.” Jane’s enthusiasm made her giddy. I glanced over and noticed two guys from campus we’d recently met, Craig and Danny. They were brothers and it showed because they both had the same jet black hair and were similar in height and muscular build. Craig and Danny were playing pool with a couple of friends.  Craig spied us and flashed a cute smile our way.
“Hey, did I tell you that Craig called me?” Jane gawked at them openly as she twisted a blonde lock of hair.
“I guess it slipped your mind. Did you know they were going to be here tonight?” I teased.
A sheepish grin spread across her face. “Yeah, Craig said they’d be here tonight. Actually, I’ve spoken to him a few times. He’s really nice. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about him calling before, but I thought you wouldn’t be interested. I figured it was the last thing you’d want to hear about with everything you’ve been through lately.”
“You should have told me. There’s no reason for you not to…I don’t mind.”
“Let’s go talk to them,” she urged.  As we approached, their eyes roamed all over us and I felt like a piece of meat at the butcher's.
“Hey, guys!”
“Hey. It’s good to see you. Damn, you girls are the finest things in here,” Craig mused.
“No doubt,” Danny chimed in. The two other guys playing pool with them took notice and walked over. They were both from the big, dark, and muscular variety—whoa!  One stood a little taller than the rest. I glanced at him briefly, trying not to make my observation obvious. I couldn’t help but notice how handsome he was.
I think Jane couldn’t stop smiling at them even if she wanted to. Her favorite type of attention was full-on admiration.
“Stop drooling, Craig, and introduce us,” insisted the one with dark brown wavy hair and blue eyes.
Craig glanced at us, appearing a little embarrassed, and flashed a scowl at his friend. When he introduced us, the way he said our names sounded exotic and I felt a little self-conscious.
“This ugly guy next to me is Jack Fallon.” He nudged Jack hard on the shoulder. Jack winked at us. I imagine he did well with the ladies because he was anything but ugly. Craig straightened up and stopped acting silly to introduced his next friend. “And he’s Derek Rendall.”  Derek took one step forward and smiled warmly. I noticed his deep green eyes as the light caught them. His dark brown hair and strong jawline complemented his masculine features.  Be still my heart.
“Nice to meet you,” I stammered and felt stupid. What’s wrong with me?
“Same,” Jane said mischievously.
I tried not to laugh at Jane’s enthusiasm, but I couldn’t blame her.  These guys were handsome and the one named Derek…well, he was flat out gorgeous.  I was glad no one here was a mind reader and hoped that my body language wasn’t giving too much away.  I’m by no means a tramp, but I had to admit these guys were hot. They must have spent a little extra time swimming in the handsome end of the DNA pool.

 My Review: 3 stars
This was an ok book. I had thought that it would be interesting, and to an extent it was. The lore presented was interesting, and I believe I've heard something similar previously about werewolves. The bit I found more interesting was about the shifters. That was a nice touch. I thought the relationship between Alyssa and Derek seemed a little forced to me. Alyssa seemed to be a magnet for trouble even before she met Derek and the rest of the guys, and so I don't really blame Reyna for her attitude towards Alyssa. Shayla reminded me of a medicine woman, which I suppose she was. This just wasn't the book for me. It may be for you. Something that touches on the mystical, yet doesn't really get into it that deeply.

Prologue:
"He’s coming! He’s coming!" one of his soldiers cried, running past the crude tents.
The devil himself on his heels. The sound of the black horse, its hooves tearing into the loamy earth, echoed through the forest. The ominous herald announcing its rider’s approach—the Angel of Death.

Both man and beast found nothing but agony waiting at the end of the man’s sword. Slaughter and brutality his hallmark. He wielded them well.

His men fled, stomachs roiling with fear. The knowledge they had assisted his butchery, complying in mute terror, afraid to raise their eyes to his lest they be next, clear on each countenance. He swore he’d ride them to hell and back, their scalps hanging from his saddle, dripping bloody as tokens for the gods of war if they defied him. They would never be free...

About the Author:

I'm a New Yorker, born and bred, and for the most part my stories and my characters embody the grit and complexity of the city. An avid traveler, I use my experiences from around the world in all my books. There isn't a place my characters live or travel to that I haven't been myself.
Like most authors, my love affair with the written word started as a child with the books I read. Even today, I love to read almost as much as I love to write. My favorite stories are the ones that transport me, that bring me to places and introduce me to characters that leave me breathless...the ones that spark the fire of my imagination, allowing me to dream in the world of 'what if?'

I've always been a scribbler, and from the time I could write my name I've been making up stories. So it was no surprise when I earned degrees in both Journalism and Fine Art, but after working in the trenches of Madison Avenue as a Graphic Artist, I decided to do what I love most full time. Write.

In the meantime I am also a founding member and former President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre...and when I'm not 'bichok' (but in a chair hands on keyboard), I'm spending time with my husband and our three kids, traveling to exciting, romantic places ...for inspiration, of course!
