I
knew that Lisa would not disappoint with this second book in the Songbird
Trilogy, and I was so right. This book began just after the last book ended. If
you haven't read the first book, Songbird, stop reading this now and go read
it. Things will make so much more sense.
Tara
is in an unenviable position; she's engaged to a man out of a sense of duty,
she says so herself that if he hadn't been deployed, she wouldn't be engaged to
him at all. She loves Riley, but isn't in love with him - huge difference.
There's also the fact that Riley kept secrets from her, and apparently
continued to do so, even after they were engaged. I didn't like that he wanted
to control what she did with her money, and with herself. That's not love, it's
possession and it's wrong. I understand Riley, being a man and a soldier would
want to support his family, but he takes it too far in my opinion.
Tara
spends a lot of time with her best friend, Cole. I knew when I was reading the
last book that Cole was different, I was so right. Cole opens up and shows Tara
exactly who he is - all of him. They are both from the same world, but have
decided it's not for them. Cole is being pressured by his family to marry a
girl he can't stand, and the girl just wants his money and status. I'm not saying that Cole is an angel in this book, but he realizes what and who he wants and makes changes to try and achieve that goal. I loved
Cole's Pops and thought that he was just an awesome person. I also loved the
last bit that Pops got in. Can't say more, but it's so good.
After
reading this book, I want for Tara and Cole to be together. Whether I get that
or not remains to be seen. They truly are each other's best friend, and they're
also in love with each other. There are a lot of things that happen that make
me want Cole and Tara together, the most important is that they are a couple in
every sense of the word. They talk out their differences, and Cole takes Tara's
opinion of things seriously. He wants her to be happy, and to him that's
everything. He values her interests and her thoughts. Cole keeps her safe in
more than one way. He rescues her again, and that's when things start to heat up
between them. From that point on, everything between Tara and Cole sizzles, and
keeps getting hotter. They do fight and have disagreements, but they also can't
stay away from each other, and they always work things out and support the
other. That's how it's supposed to be.
The
last line of the book wasn't completely unexpected, but damn! Lisa knows
how to keep the reader hooked completely. All I can say further is that I hope
that Tara stays true to herself and the realizations she had before everything
went the way they did. I absolutely can't wait for the last book, and truly do
hope that Tara, the Songbird, is freed and happy.
I awoke with a start.
My arm had gone to sleep from laying on it all night, and my face was squished into someone’s neck. It was Cole’s. I inhaled his warm cedar and musk scent. Even after sleeping on the couch all night, he smelt unbelievable.
Sitting up, I moved my head from side to side, trying to stretch out the kinks.
“Good morning, sleepy head. Did you just sniff me again?”
I looked down at Cole. He was grinning up at me as I rubbed my shoulders and numb arm.
“Good morning,” I replied with a groan, as I stretched my arms over my head. “You know I’m staying here so I don’t have to sleep on a couch. Kind of defeats the purpose, spending the night out here.”
He sat up and started rubbing my arm, trying to get the blood to flow back into it.
“I disagree. I’m sure I’m much more comfortable to lay on than your lumpy couch.” He moved his attention to my shoulders, and I sighed. “Besides, it’s not every day I have someone dribble all down my neck.”
I wiped my hand across my cheek. It was damp. Oh my God, I had dribbled in my sleep. I checked Cole’s neck and quickly wiped it dry.
“You should be used to it,” I said, trying to make light of the embarrassing situation. “You have girls drooling over you everywhere you go.”
He chuckled. “No one who matters.” He took my hand away from his now dry neck and held it. “Until now, that is.”
