Sawyer says…
Casual flings are the only way to go.
Everyone you trust eventually leaves.
Falling in love is for anyone, but her.

What else would she say when all she knows is loss and abandonment? Sawyer Sterling learned too young that depending on anyone else will get her nothing but heartache in the end. Never shying away from outwardly showing her love, she struggles accepting it herself. Stubbornly, she vows to never risk her heart.

Dealing with revelations she never saw coming, her impulse is to distance herself from emotional entanglements. When her past collides with her present, can Jared Keller help prove to her just how wrong her assumptions are? He is the exception to her argument that everyone leaves. Will she ever see him as something she deserves?

My Review: 5 stars
This is the first book I've had the pleasure of reviewing for Carey. I am more than pleased to say that all the good things I've heard about her writing are true. I loved this book. Sawyer didn't believe that she was worth love because of the way that her grandmother had sent her away after her parents died when she was 10. This book shows us Sawyer's journey to find out the truth about what happened all those years ago. What she discovers along the way changes the way she thinks about her grandmother and herself.
Jared has been in Sawyer's life since she was 10 and her grandmother sent her to live with Jared's mom, her godmother. Jared has had a tough past couple of years, but he's getting through them. Jared has loved Sawyer for a long time, and has watched how she is in relationships. He knows when she'll run from one and what to do, because they've been friends for such a long time.
All that changes at their friend Sarah's wedding, when Sawyer suggests something to Jared. He doesn't say much, he's a man of action. He rocks Sawyers world when they get back to their room and doesn't stop. Jared knows how Sawyer is, so when she needs time, he gives it to her. Even though it kills him. Once things are in motion for Sawyer to begin her journey, Jared is there with her to help in any way that he can.
I really enjoyed reading about the self-discovery that Sawyer goes through in this book, and when she finally realizes that she loves Jared and tells him, that was an amazing chapter. I truly loved the end of this book. I loved how patient and giving Jared was to Sawyer to help her through everything, but also to let her realize that his love is there to stay. I loved the way that Sawyer allowed herself to be open to everything that she found along the way in her journey, and the way that she realized that she really did have that love all along, even if she wasn't shown it.
Carey has written some beautifully flawed characters, and I loved them. I loved the story line and the way that it flowed along. I am looking forward to reading more of Carey's work, as I'm pretty certain that it'll be fantastic.
