My Review: 4 stars
This was a pretty good series. Both books short, but filled with life changing events and memorable people. In the first book we get to know Avery, her first love Hayden and his best friend, Bryce. They are quite the unexpected trio. In this book, Hayden and Avery are in High School, while Bryce has already gotten his GED and is emancipated. They all go through things, some together, some not. But there is one life altering thing that affects them all. Moving on from that point is difficult to say the least. Devastating is a much better word for what happens here.
In the second book, it's five years later and both Avery and Bryce have moved to Los Angeles to escape the pain of the past. They just don't realize that they carry it with them. They both have worked hard to build lives for themselves, but are both still punishing themselves for what happened in the first book. Neither believes they deserve to be happy, so when they find it with each other, they're a bit stunned. It does take some time for Bryce to get past Avery's wall that she's built around herself. Once he does, he doesn't want to let her go. Both Avery and Bryce realize that no one else will ever understand them they way that the other does, no one will ever come close. There is a lot of healing that takes place in this book, and a couple of eye-opening moments, and a few tender-hearted moments. All are worth it. What they have in the end is so much better than in the beginning. Great job with the series, Riley.
